Search engine optimization covers more ground than the job title suggests. A real engagement moves across six areas at once, and the ordering matters more than the checklist. What follows is the SEO strategy I run, in the sequence I run it.
Nothing ranks that cannot be crawled. Technical SEO starts with crawlability and indexing: resolving crawl errors, collapsing redirect chains, fixing canonical conflicts, and confirming in Google Search Console that the pages you care about are actually indexed. Site speed and mobile-friendliness come next, then structured data. Schema markup tells a search engine what an entity is instead of leaving it to infer from prose, and it increasingly decides whether a page is eligible for rich results at all. Every technical SEO audit I run ends in a prioritized fix list your developers can execute, not a spreadsheet of severity scores.
Keyword research is not a list of high-volume terms. It is a map of demand against intent, clustered so one page owns one job and no two pages compete for the same click. On-page SEO follows from that map: title and meta tags written to earn the click, headings that answer the question actually asked, content optimization against the terms the SERPs already reward, and internal linking that routes authority toward the pages that close business. Keyword rankings are the scoreboard, not the strategy.
Off-page SEO, sometimes called off-page optimization, is the part clients ask about least and lose on most. Domain authority is a third-party estimate rather than a Google metric, but the thing it approximates is real: pages backed by credible references outrank pages that are not. Backlinks earned through digital PR, original data, and assets worth referencing hold up. Link building that starts with something genuinely citable is the only kind that survives an algorithm update. For local businesses, citations and a maintained Google Business Profile do the same work at neighborhood scale.
Organic traffic is a leading indicator. Revenue is the point. I configure Google Analytics and Search Console so the KPIs that matter are visible without a data request, then report against one north star metric in a dashboard you own. Where conversion rates are the constraint rather than search engine rankings, conversion rate optimization is the higher-return investment, and I will tell you that before selling more content. CRO and SEO answer to the same number: return on investment.
Answer engines changed the endpoint, not the fundamentals. AEO and AI search optimization reward the same clarity, structure, and credibility classic search engine optimization rewards, with more weight on extractable answers and cited sources. GEO work runs alongside SEO rather than replacing it, and I scope it as a GEO consultant engagement when it earns its own roadmap. Competitor analysis in Semrush and Ahrefs still shows where the gaps are, and algorithm updates still land hardest on sites that took shortcuts.
An SEO agency gives you a team and a process. SEO consulting services give you the senior person and their judgment. An SEO specialist inside your company gives you continuity and context nobody outside can match. Most companies eventually want a blend. If the bottleneck is strategy and prioritization, a search engine optimization consultant is the cheaper fix. If it is execution volume, hire hands. Paying SEO experts to write a roadmap nobody has capacity to run is the most common way this budget disappears, and it is worth saying out loud before anyone signs.
Some problems need their own scope. A site migration is the highest-risk project in SEO and the one most often handed to whoever happens to be free. Ecommerce SEO consulting lives or dies on category architecture and product templates rather than blog volume. Local SEO is a different discipline again. Digital marketing programs that run SEO and paid media in separate rooms tend to bid against themselves, so I look at both when the account allows it.
You get the senior strategist directly — no account managers, no juniors learning on your dime. Every audit, map, and recommendation comes from the person with 13 years of reps and agency-leadership experience.
Technical wins can move the needle in weeks; compounding organic growth typically shows meaningful traction in 3–6 months. I benchmark everything so you see the trajectory from day one.
An SEO consultant is an independent search engine optimization specialist who diagnoses why a site underperforms in search and builds the plan to fix it. The work spans technical SEO, content, and authority. It is advisory first: the deliverable is a prioritized strategy, and usually the hands to help ship it.
Cost tracks scope, market, and whether you are buying strategy or execution. Quoting a range here would be guesswork against your situation, so I scope from the audit instead: what is broken, what fixing it is worth, and what it takes to ship. You get a fixed number before any work begins.
Ask what they would measure and by when. Ask about an engagement where results did not come, and what they changed afterward. Ask who actually does the work, since the people in the pitch and the people on the account are often different. Ask how they would handle a site migration, because that answer separates experience from confidence.
Mostly staffing and breadth. An agency bundles SEO with paid media, design, and account management under one retainer. A consulting company or independent consultant sells a narrower service with more senior time per hour. Neither wins in the abstract, but they fail differently: agencies tend to fail on attention, consultants on capacity.
By removing whatever is actually in the way, which is rarely what clients expect going in. Sometimes it is crawl and indexing waste. Sometimes six pages are competing for one keyword. Sometimes rankings are fine and the funnel is leaking. The audit sets the order. Guessing is how budgets vanish.
The fundamentals are learnable in a few months and worth learning even if you hire the work out. What takes years is judgment: knowing which of forty possible fixes moves revenue this quarter, and which ones only look productive in a report.
